Saving Water

More and more people are beginning to recognise that rainwater harvesting can make a substantial contribution to the nation's water management, with around 17% of all Australian households now having a tank installed on their property. This number needs to increase however, in order to have a really positive impact on Australia's dwindling water supply.

For inhabitants of the world's driest continent, Australians use a lot of water. A typical Australian household uses about 280,000 litres of water annually. Approximately half of this amount is used to water the garden and flush toilets - activities that can safely be carried out by rainwater instead. Installing a rainwater tank has the potential to reduce residential fresh water requirements by 50% and contribute to more effective use of precious water resources. You can use your rainwater in the washing machine, for flushing toilets, watering the garden, and washing the car. In addition, rainwater tanks contribute to a reduction in peak stormwater flows and sediment transport.

As well as the environmental contribution that rainwater harvesting makes, it also has a positive impact on your hip pocket, as rainwater is of course free. Tank rebate schemes are also available from the Federal Government and some State and Local Governments, making it affordable for every Australian to play a part in conserving our precious water supply.
