Garden Saving Tips

Water restrictions are still in place in many parts of Australia which encourages us to think about how we can use this limited resource more effectively, particularly in the garden.

Here are some great tips for achieving an attractive, enjoyable garden while still saving water:

  • Wait for autumn, preferably after the autumn rains start and the weather is cooler, before you put in young plants, start a new grass lawn or even install a new irrigation system
  • Choose tougher, hardier plants that are more suited to the conditions and therefore require less water - preferably Australian natives that our wildlife can call home
  • Mulch and compost - Mulch can reduce evaporation from soil by up to 70%
  • Rethink pot plants - they use a lot more water than those in the ground
  • How much to water - Many plants are tougher than you think and can even be trained to survive on less water
  • Make use of rainwater - Using collected rainwater on your garden is a great way to keep plants alive without wasting precious drinking water, and best of all, it's free!

Water efficient gardens can be healthy gardens. By using the correct products and plants, you can maintain plant life, improve soil conditions, and have a green garden all year round.
