About Rainwater Harvesting
Rainwater Harvesting involves more than just a water tank. A complete solution combines collecting rainwater and using it efficiently in a way that helps save the environment and reduce your water bills.
During hot, dry summer months, collected rainwater is ideal for use on the garden or to wash the car. One of the best uses of rainwater, especially through the wetter months when the water is not required outside, is to flush toilets.
Did you know?
- Flushing toilets consumes about 14% of a households water that is fit for human consumption
- Washing machines use about 16% of a households water throughout the year
- During summer in metropolitan areas, gardens use about 20% of drinking water. In regional areas, this can be much higher
By connecting your toilet and/or washing machine to a tank fitted with a pump that has a mains-water back-up system installed, the tank water can be used all year round. When tank water is available, the pump uses it, but automatically switches to mains water when the tank is empty.
Rainwater tanks are becoming increasingly popular, with around 17% of Australian households owning one, and this number continues to grow. And why not, when rainwater is free, it is better for your garden than greywater, and can have a significant impact on the environment and your water bills.
